KATHMANDU, August 11: The issue of Fewa Lake encroachment has entered the parliament on Friday.

Seeking special time in parliament, CPN-UML lawmaker from Kaski, Chudamani BK Jangali expressed concerns over the possibility of the lake becoming extinct if encroachment continued unabated.
 
“Fewa lake is crown jewel of Pokhara's tourism industry. Land mafia has encroached upon 1692 ropanis of the lake. A probe panel headed by Bishwa Prakash Lamichhane when Baburam Bhattarai was prime minister, has already submitted its report,” said Jangali.

The Lamichhane report has said that land mafias have registered a total 1692 ropanis of land belonging to Fewa Lake in their private ownership. Stating that Fewa Lake was spread across 22,000 ropanis of land back in 2018 BS, the report has said that the lake has now shrunk to just 4.20 square kilometers.

 “Some 140 cubic meters of sands and aggregates mixes in the Fewa lake every day. There is no check dam for the conservation of Fewa Lake,” said Jangali.

“Karna Shakya, who claims himself to be a tourism entrepreneur has built a resort by encroaching Fewa land,” he said, adding, "But state has remained a mute spectator.”

Meanwhile, issuing a press statement Friday, Youths Association of Nepal (YAN), a sister organization of the CPN-UML, has demanded action against those involved in Fewa land encroachment. The youth wing has also demanded that the government demolilsh the illegal structures built on the lake's land.
