MAHENDRANAGAR, Aug 28: Nirmala Pant of Bhimdatta Municipaltiy-2 in Kanchanpur was a bright student. Hailing from a poor family in the far western region, she was studying in grade nine and had dreamt of studying science after completing her grade 10. Both her parents had the same dream for her.

Her dreams came crashing down after she went to her friend Roshani Bom's house to do homework together. The friend's house is around 1.5 kilometers away. But she did not return.Nirmala became a victim of rape and subsequent murder. Monday marked a month of the incident but no one involved in the incident has been brought to face legal action for the heinous crime.“She always used to excel in her studies. But some heartless people took her life,” said Nirmala's mother Durgadevi, with eyes full of tears. Although she is now tired of answering all the questions asked by numerous people, she has not lost hope for justice.“She was a special child. Whenever we received guests, she never left any stone unturned to greet them,” Durgadevi recalled. “She had so many dreams after passing Secondary Education Examination. Had she survived, we would have supported her endeavor even by taking loans.”

According to Nirmala's sister Manisha, Nirmala had won many prizes in extra-curricular activities at the school. “She used to step up in every competition. She led many committees of the school to organize extra-curricular activities.”
