Family planning government's top priority: DPM Yadav

KATHMANDU, March 19: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health and Population, Upendra Yadav, on Monday said that the government has attached a high priority to family planning programs.

Inaugurating a national conference on family planning organized by the MoHP, with the support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and ADRA along with 20 other organizations working on family planning, Minister Yadav said the conference would help to come up with concrete programs.

“This will provide an opportunity to share learning and discuss innovative strategies to support the country's goal to achieve the target set by the Sustainable Development Goal on FP of reaching 75% contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR) by 2030 and meet various other national health indicators as well,” said the minister.

The chair of the conference and director general at Family Welfare Division, Dr RP Biccha, stated that there is a critical need for investment in the health sector to increase the contraceptive prevalence rate and decrease the unmet need. He also said that the government is committed to investing seven percent of the budget in health sector annually.

At the function, stakeholders from government and non-government organizations stressed expanding effective birth control programs to the needy people. The major focus of the speakers was tied around the way forward on stagnant Contraceptive Prevalence Rate high unmet need through innovative approaches and increasing national health budget and effective coordination and collaboration.

Health Service Director General Dr Guna Raj Joshi shared that evidence-based findings presented at the conference would eventually guide the government and other stakeholders to formulate policies and plan effectively.
