Family members encircle hospital after new mother dies

DADELDHURA, June 16: Tensions ran high at Dadeldhura Hospital after the death on Friday of a young woman who had just given birth. Alleging sheer negligence on the part of doctors, locals and family members of deceased Gita Tamrakar, 26, of Amargadhi picketed the hospital on Saturday. They demanded stringent action against those responsible for the death. The issue was later resolved and an agreement reached between the family of the deceased and the hospital.

Agitating locals had obstructed vehicular movement in the area from 10 a.m. Gita had given birth at the hospital through C-section 14 days ago. Family members agreed to stop their protests following the three-point agreement .

Chief District Officer of Dadeldhura, Raju Prasad Paudel, informed Republica that a letter was forwarded in this connection to the Ministry of Health and Population(MoHP) .

The district administration office (DAO) has urged MoHP to send an inspection team as mentioned in the agreement . The ministry has been requested to bring doctors from outside the district for the postmortem on the deceased. Besides that, MoHP, as well as the Ministry of Social Development of Sudurpaschim Province, have been asked for suitable compensation for the woman's family.

Gita was admitted to the hospital on Friday after suffering heavy bleeding. According to family members, carelessness by doctors during the operation was the reason for her death.

She was reportedly referred to another hospital after being given 12 pints of blood. Although the child was delivered successfully, he had to be kept in the ICU for five days .

Gita was admitted to the hospital on May 30 and discharged on June 7. The hospital had told her not to worry about the bleeding, saying this was normal for at least a month after delivery. But on Friday when she returned to the hospital with heavy bleeding, doctors pronounced her condition critical and said she should be airlifted to Kathmandu. Sadly, Gita died at around 5 p.m. before her family could arrange a helicopter.

District Police Office Dadeldhura stated that police will conduct investigations.
