Fading folk music in Palpa

PALPA, Oct 15: The celebrated Malashree Dhun elevates the spirit of Dashain. Since it is played especially during Dashain, it is known as Dashain Dhun. TV and radio stations stay abuzz with the Malashree Dhun from the first day of Dashain.

Malashree is played to chant the praises of Goddess Durga.  Though several instruments have been added to the traditional musical piece, its practice is slowly fading. To preserve and promote the tune, three Gandharvas of Tansen Municipality-3 -- Salik Gandharva, Ram Bahadur Gandharva, and Dinesh Gandharva – have arranged the piece to suit the Sarangi.

Dinesh Gandharva says that the trio aims to preserve the authentic flavor of Malashree Dhun. “People who play authentic Malashree Dhun in Tansen are gradually decreasing.”

Malshree Dhun is believed to have been originated in the Gandharva community. It later gained prominence during the period of King Siddhi Narasimha Malla. At recent times, Honi Maya Gandharava kept the tradition of playing the Malashree Dhun in the early morning alive. However, the practice has stopped after her demise. Dinesh Gandharva looks to preserve the ritual started by Honi Maya.  He says, “Not many musicians in Tansen play this tune.  I’m searching for experienced musicians who are familiar with Malashree Dhun as it’s our duty to preserve our customs.”

Nowadays, Malashree Dhun can be found on the web with ease. People prefer playing the tune on their digital gadgets resulting in the gradual fade. Despite the influence of modernization, it is important to stick to our cultural roots.  It is also necessary to produce capable musicians who can keep the spirit of festivities alive.
