KATHMANDU, July 31: An informal meeting of United Democratic Madheshi Front (UDMF) held at the central office of Tarai Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP) in Kathmandu has reiterated that the Election Commission should extend the voters´ registration process for a month.

"More than 5.2 million voters who have citizenship certificates are yet to be registered," said Jitendra Sonal, Joint Secretary of TMDP.

He further said that the existing number of constituencies should be increased by five in the Tarai. "More than 50 percent of the country´s population lives in the Tarai, so the region should get a minimum of 121 constituencies out of the 240 set aside for first-past-the-post system," he said. Talking to Republica, Sonal said the meeting of UDMF could not get a formal shape as Rajendra Mahato, Chairman of Sadbhavana Party (SP) was not present. The UDMF is an alliance of five Madheshi parties including SP.

Sonal said that they will hold a formal meeting of UDMF very soon.
