KATHMANDU, August 9: Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki has revealed that she faced impeachment motion on the day when she was scheduled to hear a case on Fewa land encroachment.

In an exclusive interview with Republica, former chief justice Karki said there is a huge interest group that wants to prevent the apex court from ordering the vacating of the encroached land of the Fewa lake. "Fewa lake encroachment is a serious issue. A hearing on the case was scheduled on the very day they [Nepali Congress and CPN (Maoist Center] brought an impeachment motion against me. I was looking into it myself," she said in the interview.

A case concerning Fewa lake encroachment remains sub judice at the Supreme Court since years. "I suspect the impeachment motion was brought to prevent me from issuing a final verdict on Fewa encroachment. If I was in court I would have settled it by now," she said.

According to Karki, a similar case had been registered at the Supreme Court against Phulbari Resort and that her bench had issued verdict in favor of the victim. She also expressed concern that hardly any institution remains in the country that is free of corruption.

"Now corruption has crossed all limits, so much so that you would not want to watch TV or read newspapers, because that is all that you get to read. It is hard to find even one corruption-free institution today," she has said.
