Cosplay, a contraction of costume play, is a rather more common hobby among today’s youth. A broader use of the term cosplay applies to any costumed role-playing in venues apart from the stage. Today’s youth spend most of their time on the internet watching anime and reading manga. For them, cosplay events have become a fun way to interact with like-minded people and develop social skills. This culture is equally popular among boys and girls and it is not unusual to see them in genders bent roles.
Millenias have grown up watching anime, cartoons and animated movies, making them dream about being in a world of those fictional characters. Those who want to experience their dream world go to cosplay events so as to rejuvenate their childhood fantasy and witness their favorite characters come to life. The crowd of youths gathrered at LABIM Mall on Satuarday gives an idea on the popularity of cosplay events in Kathmandu.
