KATHMANDU, Feb 8: Preparations have been made to lease an engine to fly the narrow-body aircraft of Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC), which has been grounded at Doha Airport in Qatar since December 28.

NAC's narrow-body A320 aircraft 9N-AKW had an engine problem while parking after a regular Kathmandu-Doha flight last December. The corporation has already invited a global tender for Maintenance Repair Organization (MRO) for the maintenance of the engine with the serial number V17584.

The engineering team of Qatar Airways based in Doha had identified the internal defect in the engine on the left side of the aircraft and suggested to the corporation to replace the engine of the aircraft. After consulting about the issue with the engine manufacturer PW/ IAE, the engineering team suggested replacing and repairing the engine. The process of leasing the engine of the aircraft has been started.

The corporation had called for a Global Request for Proposal (RFP) on January 9, 2022 to repair the damaged engine. M/s MTU Maintenance Lease Services BV was selected from the companies that had sent their proposals to NAC.  

It is estimated that it will take more than three months for the corporation to repair the aircraft.
