KATHMANDU, Oct 3: A native elephant named ‘Makuna’ of the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve has died due to electric shock.

According to the chief conservation officer of the reserve, Ashok Ram, the death of the tusker is a great loss to the reserve. The elephant died due to electrocution in a paddy field near the reserve.

Just a few weeks ago, the Reserve Office had stated that preparations for relocating Makuna were underway. The Koshi Tappu Conservation Center under the Nature Conservation Fund was given the responsibility of the study for relocating Makuna.

Although Makuna was a wild elephant, he had been living in the reserve for a long time and was the guardian of the other elephants in the stable. However, Makuna had claimed more than a dozen lives in Sunsari and Saptari districts.
