KATMANDU, Feb 11: The Election Commission (EC) is preparing to submit the overall poll results to the president by Wednesday at any cost.

The election body, which has already asked the political parties to submit the names of the winners under the proportional representation (PR) category, wants all five parties to work in accordance with electoral laws while announcing winners from the closed list.

"We expect the parties to submit the list of winners within the deadline (Monday). If they fail to abide by the inclusive electoral provisions, we may have to ask them to revise the list within two days as stated in the law," said Election Commissioner Ishwari Prasad Paudyal, adding, "We will make such request on Monday itself."

Commissioner Paudyal said they will hand over the poll results to the Office of the President immediately after the parties submit the name list of the poll-winning leaders under the PR category. "There is no point in delaying in handing over the poll results to the president," he said, adding, "We will not wait beyond Wednesday."

EC officials will go through the lists of PR seat winning candidates to make it sure they are inclusive.

So far, parties have not officially submitted the list of their winning candidates although they have submitted the closed lists. Since most of the candidates elected to the central parliament are males, the parties need to elect women from the closed list submitted to the election body.

After calculating the number of lawmakers elected under the first-past-the-post electoral system and the mandatory constitutional provision for electing at least one-third women lawmakers, the election body has asked the parties to elect maximum number of women candidates under PR category to meet the constitutional provision.

It has asked the CPN-UML to elect least 37 women members out of 41 seats the party won under the PR category. Similarly, NC has been asked to elect 20 women candidates from its closed list, and Maoist Center to elect 16 women under the PR category. RJPN and FSFN have to elect five women members each.
