EC schedules date of registration of candidacy for by-election in Chitwan-2

KATHMANDU, Feb 15: The Election Commission (EC) has scheduled the date of registering candidacy for the by-election on April 3. The by-election of Chitwan Constituency-2 is to be held on April 23.


According to the schedule published by the Election Commission, complaints against the candidates will have to be filed on April 4, registration papers and complaints will be reviewed on April 5, and then the list of candidates will be published.

Similarly, the Election Commission has announced that there is a program to publish the final list of candidates on April 6 and provide the election symbols to the candidates. Yam Bahadur Purja, information officer of the District Election Office, Chitwan said that the commission has issued a circular to the election office to conduct the voter list update program ahead of the election schedule.


Now the office is working on updating the list. The voter list will be updated from February 13 to March 30. Rabi Lamichhane, chairman of Rastriya Swatantra Party, who was elected as a member of the House of Representatives from this constituency in the November 20 election, was ruled ineligible to become an MP by the Supreme Court over his citizenship issue.


The commission prepared for the by-election as there is a legal provision to fill the vacancies through by-elections. Purja informed Republica that 82,934 votes were cast out of 125,165 voters in the November 20 election in this constituency. According to Information Officer Purja, a total of 597 new people have been registered in the electoral roll in the district from January 17 to February 12.


They have registered the names in the District Election Office, District Administration Office and Area Administration Office. As the commission has already fixed the date of the by-election, the work of collecting the voters’ list in the district has been stopped.
