EC issues 10-day notice for registration of parties for National Assembly elections

KATHMANDU, Dec 17: The Election Commission (EC) has issued a notice regarding the registration of political parties for the election of one-fourth of members of the National Assembly. According to Nepal’s constitution, a political party has to be registered at the EC to participate in the election. Releasing a notice in this regard on Thursday, the EC has scheduled the period from December 16 to December 25 for the political parties to register their nominations for the election. 

Meanwhile, the four-year term of 19 out of 20 lawmakers will come to an end on March 5. Elections for the posts will be held on January 26. According to the EC, the parties will have to submit their details regarding the numbers of their central office-bearers and members for the registration, submission date of the parties’ annual audit reports to the commission, date of the last election of the party's central level and provincial level working committees, application to change the party’s election sign, among other documents. 

Similarly, the parties have to submit a copy of the decision made by its central committee, the party’s statute and a sample of the party’s election sign. According to Article 269 (4) of the Constitution, the statutes and rules of the political parties should be democratic while submitting applications for registration for the polls at the EC. The parties should have elections for new central and province level office-bearers every five years and inclusive representation should be provided in the executive committees of different levels of the party to reflect the diversity of Nepal.
