KATHMANDU, Aug 23: Medical entrepreneur Durga Prasai has called for the formation of a new nationalist political force led by Nepalis and rooted in Nepal to safeguard the country’s sovereignty, self-reliance and national unity.

In a statement shared on social media on Sunday, Prasai said there was no alternative to building new, capable and self-reliant patriotic leadership to address the growing migration of young people, economic underdevelopment and threats to national sovereignty. He said Nepal must end its dependence on foreign embassies’ programs and external influence.

Prasai said he and his supporters had decided to launch a campaign aimed at ending the frustration among society and the younger generation and creating new hope. Arguing that the solution is to “end poverty, not the poor,” he said they would organize tech-savvy young experts who understand Nepal’s history, civilization and the foundations of its unification to build new leadership.

He said they would present the public with a concrete roadmap and programs aimed at achieving sustainable development within the next 15 years by properly mobilizing Nepal’s own resources, means and capital. Creating jobs and opportunities to bring Nepalis living abroad back home within 10 years, and ensuring that future generations do not have to leave the country for employment, were among his key commitments, he said.

Claiming that he would build the “first genuine nationalist force” established by Nepalis on Nepali soil to protect the country from fragmentation and promote sovereignty and self-reliance, Prasai sought support, suggestions and cooperation from young people, experts, national capitalists, intellectuals and the general public committed to building the country.

Prasai said that despite written agreements with successive governments, the existing leadership and political parties had failed to demonstrate the capacity and vision needed to resolve the country’s problems. He said they had concluded that leadership and political parties built with foreign training or the backing of foreign missions could not build the country.

Prasai said that since launching the ‘Nation, Nationality, Religion and Citizen Protection Campaign’ on February 13, 2023, he had been continuously raising issues related to national sovereignty, an economy controlled by limited business groups and middlemen, artificially high interest rates, and the problems faced by bank and microfinance borrowers and ordinary citizens with the government.
