KATHMANDU, Oct 19: Dr Govinda KC has ended his 13th fast-unto-death after 14 days on Wednesday evening following a 10-point agreement with the government.
Deuba-led govt, too, introduces ‘party-split’ ordinance
In the absence of parliament, the government has agreed to bring in Medical Education Act through an ordinance from the cabinet meeting on October 23 addressing the demands of Dr KC. After Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba on the phone assured Dr KC of bringing the law through ordinance, Dr KC agreed to sign the deal. However, an ordinance needs to be endorsed by parliament within three months, otherwise, it will lapse.
Minister for Health Giriraj Mani Pokhrel and Education Minister Gopal Man Shrestha signed on the agreement paper with Dr KC. Following the agreement, he took juice from a patient to end the protest.
The government has also agreed to cut the fees for post-graduate medical education, probe the irregularities in the medical education and take action against corrupt officials of the Tribhuvan and Kathmandu University among other things.
