KATHMANDU, July 17: Agitating orthopedic surgeon Dr Govinda KC, who has been on a fast-unto-death for the last 18 days demanding reforms in medical sector, has been diagnosed with hypocalcemia.

The condition of his blood was unknown since he refused to undergo blood test until the formation of a talks team.

Hypocalcemia was detected in his blood when he underwent blood test immediately after the formation of the talks team. Medically, hypocalcemia is a condition in which there are lower-than-average levels of potassium in the liquid part of the blood, or plasma.

Potassium keeps the muscles and heart beats in good condition.

Those suffering from hypocalcemia feel weaknesses in their muscles which begin from the feet and gradually move toward upper parts of the body.

KC feels weak while sitting and his legs are not supportive. He has stomach-ache and nausea.

In the worst-case scenario, the patient with hypocalcemia has respiratory problem, kidney and heart problem.

The hospital has kept a ventilator standby at hunger strike site, lest KC’s condition would get more critical suddenly.

Dr Dhiraj Gurung, who is involved in KC’s treatment, says that condition of his heart may aggravate at any time soon as he has already hypocalcemia.

This is KC's 15th hunger strike.
