By dieting, we mean the practice of eating food in a regulated and supervised manner to decrease, maintain, or increase body weight and also to prevent and treat diseases, such as diabetes. When you are on diet, either to lose excess weight or to make yourself fit and healthy, you are meant to follow certain regime every day that includes exercise too. A weight-loss dieting is categorized as low fat, low carbohydrate, and low calorie, and more fiber intake.

A weight-loss dieting is categorized as low fat, low carbohydrate, and low calorie, and more fiber intake.


Looking back to the history of dieting, the first popular diet was known as ‘Banting’, named after William Banting who was a notable English undertaker. In his 1863 pamphlet, “Letter on Corpulence, Addressed to the Public” he has outlined the details of a particular low-carbohydrate, low-calorie diet that had led him to his own dramatic weight loss.


Experts from around the world have rated the nine most popular diets that include: Atkins diet, The Zone diet, Ketogenic diet, Vegetarian diet, Vegan diet, Weight Watchers diet, South Beach diet, Raw food diet, and Mediterranean diet.

There are thousands of diets which we can follow according to our choice and need either for losing weight or for staying fit, lowering cholesterol, living a long and healthful life, and so on. Besides all these factors, the one thing that we need to understand is no matter which diet routine or regime we follow, the most important thing is to plan a fixed eating and drinking habit for ourselves so that only we can achieve our goal and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Following a diet and leaving it midway doesn’t help at all. So whenever we plan to follow something, whether it is diet or some other thing, we should motivate ourselves to stick to that and be dedicated to the goal throughout.


Probably the most popular diet today is Ketogenic diet. It is basically a low-carb diet that is aimed in burning the unwanted fat by forcing the body to rely on fat for energy instead of carbohydrates.

Ketosis is commonly observed medical condition in diabetic people. When one has it, the body does not have enough insulin or is not using insulin correctly. Ketosis occurs when the body lacks its primary fuel source of glucose. When ketone level raises the acidity level of the blood, the resulting condition is ketoacidos. People with type 1 diabetes are more likely to develop ketoacidos. 


Ketogenic diet is all about breaking down fat stored within the body that aims at weight loss. In this diet, 75 percent of calories are derived from fats. It is basically targeted for the short term weight loss. A research article published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that obese men following a ketogenic diet for 4 weeks lost an average of 12 pounds during the dieting period.

For people who have been suffering from cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome, ketogenic diet has been helpful. It also improves level of HDL cholesterol (high-density lipoproteins, also known as “good” cholesterol). 


Before starting any kind of diet it is always better to take expert medical advice so that no complications arise.
