Dhami bags historic wrestling gold

KATHMANDU, Dec 7: Nepal’s Sangita Dhami created history by winning the first gold medal for Nepal in international wrestling during the 13th South Asian Games, in Janakpur on Saturday. Before Dhami, Nepal had no gold medals in wrestling under men's or women's category.


In women’s category for 55 Kg, Dhami defeated Bangladesh’s Sarkar Rime, 4-1, to secure the gold.
The 19-year-old was participating in her first international event. She was left in tears after the match. Hailing from Mahendranagar, Bhim Dutta Municipality of Sudur Paschim Province, Dhami made the long journey to inscribe her name in the history book of the country's sports.


“I want to dedicate my medal to my coach and my mother,” Dhami told Republica after the momentous win.In the same category for 50 kg, Nepal’s Manisha Singh won bronze medal. India’s Sheetal Tomar and Sri Lanka’s Ni Roshani got gold and silver medals respectively. In the same category for 53 kg, India’s Pinki seized the gold medal whereas Nepal’s Siwangi Dube was limited to silver medal. Likewise, Sri Lanka's Shamika won the bronze.

In men’s category for 65 kg, Amit Kumar registered the first gold medal in the 13th editions of South Asian games. He defeated Sri Lanka’s Chamara in the final whereas Nepal's Saroj Yadav captured the bronze medal after finishing third.

In men’s category for 57 kg, India’s Rahul overcame the challenge from Sri Lanka’s Kathurangana in the final to register gold. Similarly, Nepal took bronze medal home as Naresh Prasad Yadav finished third in the category.
