Departmental teams dominate volleyball tournament on first day

POKHARA, Dec 27: The 21st Women’s and 31st Men’s National Volleyball Tournament has kicked off at the Pokhara Stadium in Pokhara from Tuesday.

Departmental teams Nepal Army, Armed Police Force (APF), Nepal Police Club and Western Region opened their day registering wins in the men’s category.

In the first match of the opening day under men’s volleyball, Nepal Army defeated Eastern Region in straight sets 25-20, 25-19 and 25-14. Likewise, APF overcame Far-Western Region 25-12, 25-17, and 25-19. Similarly, in the third match, Nepal Police Club also registered a straight set victory over Mid-Western Region 25-16, 25-17 and 26-16 while Western Region thumped Central Region 25-21, 25-22 and 25-16. 

In Women’s category, departmental teams APF, Nepal Police Club, Central Region and Western Region opened their campaign with wins. APF comfortably beat Eastern Region 25-2, 25-4 and 25-7.  Likewise, in the second match of women’s volleyball, Central Region defeated Mid-Western Region 25-2, 25-4 and 25-8 while host Western Region eased past Far-Western Region 25-2, 25-4 and 25-8. Also, Nepal Police registered 25-13, 27-25 and 25-6 win over another departmental team Nepal Army.

Organized under the coordination of National Sports Council (NSC) and Western Regional Volleyball Association, the tournament features eight teams each under women’s and men’s categories, including teams from three departmental sides and five Regions. 

According to tournament coordinator Raj Kumar Gurung, the tournament’s best players under various categories will be awarded opportunity to participate in the 17th Asian Games being held in 2018 and the 13th South Asian Games being organized in 2019. 

Gurung further said that the winner of the tournament will get a purse of NRs 50,000 whereas the second and third placed teams will bag NRs 30,000 and 20,000 respectively. The best players will also be rewarded handsomely, Gurung added.

Minister for Youth and Sports Rajan Kumar KC had inaugurated the tournament. 

According to Yam Gurung, central deputy chair of the volleyball association, 25 best performing players each from men’s and women’s category will be shortlisted, who will train at a closed volleyball camp. Later, out of 25 best players in each category, 12 players will be picked for national team, who will later compete in Asian and South Asian Games.
