KATHMANDU, Oct 25: Parliament is holding deliberations on the impeachment motion filed against the chief of Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority, Lokman Singh Karki, from 3 pm Tuesday.
The motion against Karki was registered at the parliament secretariat with the signature from 157 lawmakers of CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Center) on last Wednesday. The length of deliberations in the House will depends upon the number of lawmakers registering their names to take part in the discussion.
The largest political party in the parliament, Nepali Congress (NC), hasn't made its opinion clear about whether the party will support the impeachment motion or not, but a number of lawmakers from the NC have been publically lobbying for impeachment. Madhes-based political parties are opposing the impeachment, accusing the big parties of diverting the issue instead of addressing their demands.
After brief deliberations, the House will forward the motion to the Impeachment Recommendations Committee for further investigation. The newly-formed committee has been preparing its working procedure for the investigation.
Lawmakers registering the impeachment motion have accused Karki of being involved in various inappropriate activities, breaching constitutional jurisdiction of the anti-graft body, working to serve his vested interest and taking revenge against those who have questioned his work. Likewise, the lawmakers have accused him of hindering the implementation of court orders.
