Hospital agrees to pay Rs 500,000 in compensation

ITAHARI, May 7: Residents of Itahari staged a protest outside the Apex Hospital on Friday night, accusing its doctors of the death of a sick patient because of their negligence. The family of the deceased and locals pelted stones demanding action against the doctors involved.

Johnson Rai, 26, of Morang Sundarharaicha-7 died in the course of treatment on Friday. He died shortly after being admitted to the hospital. Within no time, the relatives and villagers of the deceased staged a protest by throwing stones at the hospital.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Khagendra Bahadur Khadka of Area Police Office Itahari, police teams were mobilized overnight to prevent the situation from getting out of control.

Aarti Limbu, aunt of the deceased, has alleged that Johnson died due to an overdose of medicine. However, the hospital’s director Rajendra Pokhrel said that treatment failed as the patient was already in critical condition due to liver damage.

After an overnight demonstration, the two sides reached an agreement at 4AM after the hospital agreed to pay Rs 500,000 in compensation.

Earlier on March 17, a group of locals had vandalized the hospital after the death of a sick boy. The two sides had also reached an agreement after the hospital agreed to pay compensation for the child’s death.
