Darchula flood update: Five confirmed dead, six missing

DARCHULA, Sept 10: Five people have died and six others are missing due to floods and landslides in Darchula. As a result of incessant rain since Friday night, two people were killed in floods in Mahakali and Lasku Rivers, three people were buried in landslides and six people are missing.

Manmati Karki, a resident of Mahakali Municipality-1 and Nandaram Bohra, a resident of Mahakali Municipality-2, died due to flood in Lasku River. Similarly, local residents Janaki Thagunna, Dhanuli Thagunna and Mohanram Parki died when a landslide swept away their house in Naugad Rural Municipality-2, Salla, according to police.

Likewise, Saraswati Luhar of Mahakali Municipality-4 and her husband Dhansingh Karki of Mahakali Municipality-3, Dhansingh Karki of Dungri, her sons Deepak Karki and Dinesh Karki and Manmati Shahu of Mahakali Municipality-2 Maikholi have gone missing due to the flood in Lasku river. According to the District Police Office, Darchula, a search operation is currently underway to trace their whereabout.

According to the preliminary data of the police, 14 houses have been completely damaged in Darchula due to floods and landslides. Mikeshwari Basic School located in Mahakali Municipality-2 has been completely damaged, while the building of Dasharath Basic School located in Ward No. 4 Bangebagad has been partially damaged.

A suspension bridge connecting to Chhapari and the motorized bridge on the Lasku river have been swept away by the flood. Police said at least 7 vehicles parked near the Lasku River were also swept away by the flood.
