DADELDHURA, July 26: Export of seeds for autumn and winter crops from Dahaldehura rose in value to Rs 10 million in the last fiscal year.

A total of 121,909 metric tons of seeds of various agricultural products was exported from the district in last year, according to Dadeldhura Krishak Cooperative Limited.

The cooperative has formed several farmers' group in Dadeldhura and Baitadi districts to produce seeds.

The cooperative had exported seeds to other parts of the country. Similarly, it also exported seeds of various vegetables and cereals including beans, lady's finger, peas, radish among others, according to Dhan Bahadur Shahi, president of the cooperative.

Seeds are exported mostly to Chitawan, Gorkha, Kailali and Kanchanpur distrits, he said, adding that farmers are making fast bucks from this business.

“Earnings from seeds production is better than vegetable farming.”

The cooperative had started production of seeds some 12 years ago. Its export volume has been rising every year. Dadeldhura is famous for vegetable production in the far west.

Production of seeds should be commercialized, Shahi said. “The cooperative is thinking of increasing investment and exporting more seeds in the years to come.”
