KANCHANPUR, Feb 3: District prison office is finding it difficult to accommodate increasing number of prisoners for want of space.
With a total of 260 inmates against the capacity of only 95 at present, the prison is so much crowded that inmates are forced to sleep on galleries and passages. Some of them have been shifted to tents erected nearby, said jailor Shyam Raj Bhatta.
Furthermore, the inmates are forced to spend hours in queue to defecate or have water from water taps with the prison flooded with prisoners beyond capacity, he said.
The prison building that was built in 2023 B.S., is also at the risk of collapse, thus setting off any untoward accidents anytime, he said.
He said their call to the Division Office of the Department of Urban Development and the District Development Committee for a new building for the prison and for a drinking water system is yet to be materialized. RSS
