KATHMANDU, June 30: The CPN-UML-led provincial government in Koshi Province has faced a major setback as Chief Minister Hikmat Kumar Karki failed to secure a vote of confidence in the provincial assembly.
A total of 89 provincial assembly members were present during the voting held at the provincial assembly meeting on Friday. Of them, 46 votes were cast in favor of Chief Minister Karki. Those casting vote in favor of Karki included 40 UML provincial assembly members and six members belonging to Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP).

There are a total 93 members of the Koshi provincial assembly. A government must secure 47 votes to secure a majority in the provincial assembly.
During the voting held on Friday, a total of 43 votes were cast against him, while 4 members chose to abstain from the voting.
The failure of Chief Minister Karki to secure requisite majority votes in the provincial assembly has paved the way for the establishment of a new government in Koshi Province. Chief Minister Karki assumed office on January 8 following the provincial assembly elections held in November 2022.
