COVID deaths cross 12,000 mark in Nepal

KATHMANDU, August 31: The COVID-19 pandemic has so far claimed the lives of over 12,000 people in Nepal, with the country recording one more death due to the disease in the past 24 hours.


According to the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), the number of deaths linked to COVID-19 hit 12,001 on Wednesday. As of now, a total of 997,346 cases of coronavirus infections have been registered in the country, out of which 982,151 have recovered.

The first case of the pandemic was traced on January 13, 2020, in a Nepali student of 32 years who had returned from Wuhan University of Technology, China. Since then, Nepal has carried out PCR tests in a total of 5,890,203 individuals.


According to MoHP, Nepal recorded 271 new cases, 175 recoveries and one death linked to COVID-19 in the past one day.


In the last 24 hours, as many as 2,485 PCR and 1,435 antigen tests for COVID-19 were conducted. Of them, 224 PCR and 47 antigen tests turned out to be positive for the virus.


While 175 infected people recovered in the past 24 hours, one died of the disease during the period. There are 3,194 active cases of the disease in the country as of Wednesday and all of them have isolated themselves at either their homes or at medical facilities, the ministry says.
