COVID-19: Nepal reports record-high of 9,070 new cases, 54 deaths on Thursday

KATHMANDU, May 6: Nepal confirmed the highest single-day count of coronavirus cases on Thursday. According to the health ministry, 9,070 more people were found to have caught the virus in the past 24 hours. It accounts for 42.90 percent of the 21,142 tests carried out during the period. 

With this, the county’s cumulative casecount has soared to 368,580, including 3,529 fatalities. Nepal saw 54 deaths on Thursday alone. 

Rupandehi is another COVID-19 hotspot

According to the data released by the ministry, Rupandehi, a district in south-western Nepal, has been ravaged by the deadly second wave of the disease. The district saw at least 1,069 new cases on Thursday. 

Meanwhile, the Kathmandu Valley, the country’s worst-affected place, added  3,972 cases including the highest number of 3,163 in Kathmandu district alone. 

Number of recoveries also rising

The ministry said that at least 2,707 patients won their battles against the infectious disease in the past 24 hours. This has taken the country’s recovery tally to 292,490, as much as 79.4 percent of the total infection. The current trend shows that not only the number of new infections but also the number of recoveries is on the rise.
