COVID-19 kills 406 people in just 29 days, Nepal’s death tally goes past 900

The Kathmandu Valley alone has reported 328 deaths due to COVID-19 with 46 people dying in the past one week

KATHMANDU, Oct 29: Nepal reported 17 more fatalities linked with the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on Thursday. With this, the country’s coronavirus death toll has soared to 904 since the first death case was reported on May 16 this year.

According to the updates released by the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), it took just seven days to add 100 more fatalities to the COVID-19 death tally. The country recorded the 800th death on October 22 while the 700th fatality was reported on October 16.

The first case of death due to COVID-19 infection was reported when a 29-year-old woman from Sindhupalchowk district died of COVID-19. The number of people dying of COVID-19 surpassed 100 on August 15.

Then the death tally doubled within the next 14 days. The death tally hit the 300 mark in the following nine days on September 7. The number touched 401 on September 19 and 509 on October 1 and soared to 600 with 10 new deaths on October 9.

Nepal reported 26 COVID-19-related deaths -- the highest number of fatalities in a single day so far -- on October 21. As of Thursday afternoon, Nepal’s COVID-19 mortality rate stands at 0.6 percent of the total 164,718 infections confirmed so far.

According to the Ministry of Health and Population, the worst-affected province due to COVID-19 is Bagmati where 436 people including a Chinese national have succumbed to this disease so far. The province that has recorded the least number of COVID-19 related deaths so far is Karnali with only 10 deaths linked with this disease reported so far.

As many as 156 lives have been claimed by the disease in Province 2, while 124 in Lumbini and 114 others in Province 1 died of this disease. Similarly, the death tally in Gandaki Province stands at 47 and Sudur Paschim Province at 17 as of Thursday afternoon.

The Kathmandu Valley, where Nepal’s federal capital city lies, has so far recorded 328 fatalities in its three districts – 209 in Kathmandu, 61 in Bhaktapur and 58 in Lalitpur.
