Court order paves the way to place mobile holders and stands on motorcycle

KATHMANDU, Feb 22: Mobile stand (mobile holder) and GoPro (helmet camera) can be placed in the vehicle from now onwards.

Speaking to Republica on Tuesday, Amir Lama, CEO of the ride-sharing company Sajilo Sathi Pvt, said that the court decision has paved the way to keep a mobile stand in the motor bikes.

He said, "We had submitted a petition in the Patan High Court asking that ride sharing service drivers be allowed to keep mobile stands in their vehicles. The court issued the interim order on February 15, in which it is said to allow mobile stands. The full text of the judgment is yet to come.”

On August 31, 2022, traffic police office said that mobile stands cannot be placed on bikes. Traffic police spokesman Rajendra Prasad Bhatt told Republica that the use of mobile stands on motorcycles has also increased the risk of accidents.

He said that the risk of accidents has increased when using such mobile stands on motorcycles while riding bikes, looking at maps and taking photos and videos.

He said that if you violate the traffic rules, you can be fined from Rs 500 to Rs 2,000 and if you are sent to the transport office, you can be fined from Rs 500 to Rs 20,000.

Earlier, law students David Chaudhary and Aryan Raj Pandey filed a writ petition in the court on December 7 with the support of Sajilo Saathi Pvt Ltd. The hearing on the writ petition was held on February 15, 2023. 

In the judgment, it has been mentioned that a mobile stand can be placed on a motorcycle and the biker cannot be fined.
