JHAPA, March 23: The Mechi Eye Hospital at Sainikmode, Birtamod Municipality-3 in Jhapa district has started providing cornea transplant services by setting up a cornea collection centre.

The availability of cornea transplant services in their district itself has elated the locals as they will no longer have to travel to Kathmandu for availing this service. This has brought cheers to the eye patients as well as to the people who want to donate their cornea posthumously.

The cornea collection centre has been set up with the technical assistance of the Tilganga Health Institute and the Eye Bank. The eye hospital has so far carried out 151 cornea transplant operations, the hospital administration has stated.

Annually, 160 thousand people from Nepal, India and Bhutan have been availing eye treatment and transplant services from the hospital. The hospital conducts 25 thousand eye operations annually. RSS
