Coordination between state organs sought to eliminate VAW

KATHMANDU, Dec 23: The government is pressing for coordination among all the state organs in order to bring about a sense of responsibility and duty to eliminate violence against women (VAW). 

The Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare today held a workshop during which participants viewed that VAW can only be eliminated through coordination between responsible state bodies. 

On the occasion, Chief Secretary, Dr Somlal Subedi, argued that although the legal structure is adequate to prevent injustice against women, there were challenges in the implementation part. 

Stating that women's participation in politics is encouraging, Subedi added it could not be localized and further stressed on decentralization. 

The Chief Secretary insisted on making orientation program on VAW more focused on service recipients. He also called for everyone's focus on empowering the women in the lower rungs. 

Secretary at the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare, Bishnu Prasad Lamsal, said all organizations and state organs must be responsible to mitigate the incidents of violence against women. 

International resource persons Zariyana and Abdul Aziz explained the concepts of prevention, protection, prosecution, penalty and the redress mechanisms for prevention of VAW. 

Representatives from the Ministries of Education, Health Home Affairs and organizations working in the campaign on VAW participated in the workshop. RSS
