KATHMANDU, Oct 4: UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has said that various forces have been hatching conspiracy to break an alliance of major political forces who were actively involved in promulgating the new constitution.
Addressing an interaction on the new constitution organized by the party in Kathmandu on Sunday, Dahal stressed the need for forming a consensus government among the major political parties until federalism is implemented in the country.
PM Dahal: Conspiracies being hatched to topple govt
He was of the view that formulation of any new law or amending the constitution would be difficult without unity among the major political parties in parliament. "At least for three years -- until the completion of local, provincial and federal elections -- it is essential to have a consensus government in place for amending the new constitution for addressing the demands raised across the country," said Dahal.
However he doubted that the parties will reach consensus for forming new government. "Whenever the times comes to form a new government, we see that some extra sense of our leaders starts to function. Their normal sense doesn't work and they easily forget past agreements," he said.
UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Dahal claimed that his party is ready to make a sacrifice for the country by not vying for any post in the next power-sharing deal. "Despite being a major party that contributed to promulgating the new constitution, UCPN (Maoist) isn't vying for any powerful posts like president or prime minister," Dahal said. "We just want to see the people being empowered."
He reiterated that if any major political force remains outside the government then it will be difficult to amend the constitution through a two-thirds majority. Expressing readiness for addressing the genuine demands of agitating Madhesi parties through constitutional amendments, Dahal urged the agitating parties to join the consensus alliance.
UCPN (Maoist) Vice-Chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha briefing the participants of the function said that his party had fought till the final hours to make sure that the country gets a progressive constitution. Airing their view at the interaction, leaders of various right groups and stakeholders said the new constitution still lacks progressive provisions. They said that the constitution should be amended over time to make it widely acceptable and progressive.
