KATHMANDU, August 29: Kathmandu District Court has remanded standup comedian Apoorwa Kshitiz Singh into custody for 10 days for investigation.  Singh was arrested on Sunday evening on the charge of hurting the sentiments of the Newar community through a comedy video.

Singh was arrested after he was accused of satirizing the Newar community. Deputy Superintendent of Police Dinesh Mainali said that Singh was arrested by the District Police Range, Kathmandu, on Sunday on the charge of endangering the social order and harmony and that his judicial custody was extended by 10 days.

On Saturday, some activists filed a complaint at the District Police Range, Kathmandu, demanding action against Singh for satirizing the art and culture of the Newar community and hurting the sentiments of Newar people.

In a video posted on the YouTube channel called 'Comedy Cafe', Singh satirized the issues of Newari delicacies, Newari language pronunciation, Bel Bibah in a standup comedy titled 'Newar tradition'. The video has already been removed from YouTube.

After the video was released, it received huge criticism on social media. After removing the video, Singh apologized via Facebook. He has also requested that this issue should be resolved as mistakes happen. “Let's end this matter here, mistakes happen. I did not upload that video to upset the Newar community. I had not done the research properly. I made a mistake while trying to make people laugh. I will look into it carefully in the future. I apologize to everyone,” Singh said.
