Speaking at a felicitation function for School Leaving Certificate (SLC) toppers in Parsa district, Oli showed his oratorical versatility, seemingly with equal effectiveness in non-political topics as well.
The students in Birgunj may have had reservations initially about being forced to sit through meaningless political mutterings by yet another chief guest but Oli read the situation well and had everybody falling about with his wit and reasoning during his hour-long speech.
Oli seemed totally at ease talking about the present education system and made some recommendations on ways to improve it, to the hearty applause of students, parents and even journalists, who found themselves not being treated to the usual political fare.
Oli blasted the current educational system for punishing a student for weakness in a few subjects despite being brilliant in others.
Arguing that individuals should get social recognition according to their command in their respective fields, he said that a football player can be weak in volleyball and a good singer may not necessarily be a good dancer.
“What happens if Lata Mangeshkar is asked to dance, Dhoni made to play volleyball and Ronaldinho asked to play cricket?” Oli asked and the students clapped in unison.
He said much talent was nipped in the bud by an educational system that has fostered unemployment, and called for a practical approach to education. The jovial Oli also found time to offer moral lessons to the students, saying that moral studies were not just plain praise for others but rather a medium for improving one´s personal behavior.
Oli felicitated dalit, ethnic and other students excelling in this year´s SLC and called for an environment that ensured no one was deprived of the light of education. He also called for an end to insecurity and terror in the education system.
