KATHMANDU, April 21: The rain and sudden chill on Sunday took the Valley residents by surprise as they negotiated their way through waterlogged roads and alleys to get to their destinations. Parents hesitated to send their little kids to schools. However, weather experts say the rain has hit at the right time.

“This is a pre-monsoon period and this kind of weather is expected. This rain is very necessary for maize, paddies and several other crops,” said Mani Ratna Shakya, a senior meteorologist. “Yesterday, there was a thunderstorm and today it rained, it is not at all abnormal,” he added.[break]

According to Min Kumar Aryal, an official at the department of meteorological forecasting division (MFD), the weather condition will improve from Tuesday. After a few warm days, the moister collects to a level that it triggers rain. “The rain we have experienced now is the result of the same,” Aryal said. “In fact, it should have rained a week ago. However, it is really good that it was not delayed by more than a week. It is an indicator of pre-monsoon rain, which is necessary for crops,” he added.

Aryal further said that the eastern part of the country is likely to receive much rain in the coming days. “In the eastern Nepal, it is going to rain most as it the moister from West Bengal that flows towards it forming clouds. In other parts of the country, isolated clouds can be expected,” Aryal explained.

MFD recorded a minimum of 14 degree Celsius and maximum 16 degrees, on Sunday. The chilly weather and rain forced many of the Valley residents pull out warm clothes from their wardrobes, while umbrella sellers did a good business at the main business hubs.

Radha Lamichhane of Naya Naikap told Republica that her kids were eager to go to the school on Sunday as it was their first day of their newly promoted class.

“However, I did not send them today. It´s raining from early morning and the day is so cold. It is the first day of the new session, so there would hardly be formal classes today,” said Lamichhane, whose children study at Prime English School in Tinthana, Kathmandu.
