KATHMANDU, Oct 6: Expressing serious concern over the ongoing fast-unto-death by Dr Govinda KC, a group of 16 civil society members on Tuesday urged the government to immediately address the demands raised by Dr KC.
Issuing a joint statement, Dr Pitambar Sharma, Dr Kailashnath Pyakurel, Dr Aruna Uprety, Narayan Dhakal, Bimal Nibha, Dr Suresh Dhakal, Dr Saroj Dhital, Sarita Tiwari, Dhankumari Sunar, Komal Bhattarai, Sudip Shrestha, Somat Ghimire, Prakash Rai and Hari Roka expressed solidarity with Dr KC. They also called for saving the life of Dr KC.
“Dr KC has been on a hunger strike for the past three weeks demanding reforms in the medical education and health service. We had hoped that the demands raised by Dr KC would inspire and guide the ruling Nepal Communist Party and the government which came to power by raising the agenda of socialism-oriented welfare state,” reads the statement.
Stating that it is a big irony that the government is totally apathetic to Dr KC’s demands, the civil society members slammed the government.
“This type of tendency demonstrates the government’s incompetence, and insincerity toward its own election promises and lack of culture of dialogue in line with democratic practices,” reads the statement.
Supporting Dr KC’s fast-unto-death, the civil society members urged the government to take initiatives to save his life by addressing his demands.
