CIAA files case against Nagarjun Municipality Mayor Basnet for corruption and money laundering

The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed a case against Mohan Bahadur Basnet, the Mayor of Nagarjun Municipality, at the Special Court on charges of corruption and money laundering.

KATHMANDU, Dec 30: The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed a case against Mohan Bahadur Basnet, the Mayor of Nagarjun Municipality, at the Special Court on charges of corruption and money laundering.


The CIAA accuses Mayor Basnet of abusing his authority to work for Padma Colony Pvt. Ltd., Padma Merchant Company, and Jagatguru Kripalu Pratisthan Nepal within his municipality, thereby obtaining undue benefits and causing losses to the state treasury.

The charge sheet reveals that Padya Colony paid only Rs 189.4 million to the landowners for land valued at Rs 477.5 million, including taxes and registration fees, and made a total payment of just Rs 232.2 million.


The CIAA alleges that Mayor Basnet was directly involved in the act. It was found that Rs 21.57 million was deposited into the accounts of Mayor Basnet and his wife, Urmila Basnet. Similarly, the Commission revealed that Raju Prasad Kandel, the director of Padma Colony, provided land worth Rs 68.2 million and also covered expenses of Rs 2.47 million for a wedding banquet.


The CIAA filed a case at the Special Court on Sunday against Mayor Basnet, his wife Urmila Basnet, and Padma Colony director Kandel, claiming damages amounting to Rs 92.25 million.


The CIAA also filed a case on Sunday against Mayor Basnet, his wife Urmila Basnet, and Padma Colony director Kandel on charges of money laundering. The CIAA has claimed damages amounting to Rs 131.27 million, according to CIAA Spokesperson Narahari Ghimire.
