Chitrakar, Syangbo declared best swimmers

KATHMANDU, June 18: Manish Chitrakar and Anjali Syangbo were adjudged the best swimmers of the First National School Sports (Junior Championship) in the boys´ and girls´ sections respectively. Similarly, Shuvam Shrestha and Oshina Bharati were declared the best swimmers in the boys´ and girls´ sections under the sub-junior category.



Chitrakar clinched four gold medals on Tuesday, the final day of the championship. He won the 100m backstroke (1 minute 23.50 seconds), 100m butterfly (1 minute 18.50 seconds), 50m freestyle (29.04 seconds) and 50m breaststroke (38.41 seconds) events.



Syangbo won three gold medals on Tuesday. She clinched golds in 100m freestyle (1 minute 21.16 seconds), 50m butterfly (44.04 seconds) and 50m backstroke (43.05 seconds). Meanwhile, Shila Gurung clinched gold in girls´ 100m breaststroke with a timing of 1 minute 42.22 seconds.

In the girls´ sub-junior category, Bharati bagged three gold medals. She stood first in 100m freestyle (one minute 16.40 seconds), 50m butterfly (38.23 seconds) and 50m backstroke (43.15 seconds). Likewise, Shuvam Shrestha clinched two gold medals in the boys´ sub-junior category. He claimed golds in 50m freestyle (33.73 seconds) and 50m breaststroke (42.35 seconds). Central Region claimed all the top three spots in sub-junior boys´ 4x50m freestyle relay.



Volleyball

Central Region won gold medal in boys´ volleyball on Tuesday as it struggled past Western Region 25-21, 21-25, 21-25, 25-17, 15-7 in the final. Eastern Region finished third in the event. Earlier on Monday, Central Region had claimed gold in girls´ volleyball also.



Chess

Mahesh Khadka of Everest Academy, Kailali clinched the boys´ U-12 chess title for Far-western Region in the First National School Sports Junior Championship on Tuesday while Central Region won rest of the medals in chess. Milan Lama of Annapurna Higher Secondary and Bidit Pratap Singh of Api School claimed silver and bronze medals for Central Region in boys´ U-12 chess.

Bibek Shrestha of Laboratory School, Bikash Thokar of Deepjyoti and Prabish Prajapati of Khwapring secured the top three positions in boys´ U-14 section while Bikesh Jaiswal of Annapurna, Raj Prajapati of Khwapring and Sheshan Shrestha of Swarnim claimed gold, silver and bronze medals respectively in boys´ U-16 section to prove the dominance of Central Region.

Central Region won all the medals in girls´ section also. Khushbu Jaiswal of Annapurna, Anusha Pandey of Greenland and Riya Shakya of Swarnim claimed the top three positions respectively in girls´ U-12 section. Niruja Ghimire of Greenland clinched gold in girls´ U-14 section, while Anu Ghimire of Living Stone and Anjana Bohaju of Khwapring finished second and third respectively. In girls´ U-16, Kumudini Pant of Swarnim, Bhumika Gharti Magar of Deepjyoti and Urja Adhikari of Annapurna took the top honors.

Higher Secondary Schools Association of Nepal (HISSAN) Vice-president Ramesh Silwal gave away the prizes and medals to the winners.



Table Tennis

Geeta Aryal of Western Region won gold medal in the girls´ singles of table tennis. Aryal defeated Sukriti Shrestha, also from Western Region, 11-9, 3-11, 11-8, 11-8 in the final played at the National Table Tennis Training Center, Lainchaur. Geeta Bhujel of Eastern Region and Sonu Thapa Magar of Central Region claimed bronze medals.



Badminton

Four participating regions, except Mid Western, shared a gold medal each in badminton during the Junior Championship.

Central Region won all three medals in boys´ U-14 section. Prafulla Maharjan claimed gold defeating Rukesh Maharjan 21-13, 21-11 in the final, while Prince Dahal and Prabin Linchhep claimed silver and bronze respectively.

Samiksha Neupane of Western Region clinched gold in the girls´ U-14 section as she defeated Shradeya Pradhan 26-24, 23-21 in the final. Samjhana Lama and Preeti Singh of Central Region bagged bronze medals.

Ganga Bista of Far-western Region defeated Jessica Gurung of Central Region 21-19, 21-12 in the final of girls´ U-16 section. Rojina Karki and Star Khadka of Central Region claimed bronze medals.



In the boys´ U-16 final, Shrawan Shrestha of Eastern Region defeated Gautam Kathayat of Far-western Region 16-21, 21-6, 21-15. Nir Bikram Devkota of Central Region and Riyaz Ansari of Mid-western Region bagged bronze medals.

Youth and Sports Minister Ram Kumar Shrestha gave away the medals to the winners during the closing ceremony of the championship on Tuesday. The championship was jointly organized by Private and Boarding Schools Organization of Nepal (PABSON), National-PABSON and Higher Secondary Schools Association of Nepal (HISSAN) under the initiative of National Sports Council´s School Sports Development Board.
