Chinese film festival set to kick off in Kathmandu

Chinese film festival set to kick off in Kathmandu

The annual Chinese film festival is going to be held at National Cultural Cooperation from September 17. Organized by Chinese Cultural Center in collaboration with World Cultural Net, the festival will screen six Chinese movies—‘Operation Mekong’, ‘Wolf Totem’, ‘The Grandmaster’, ‘Running like Wind’, ‘Go Away Mr Tumor’, and ‘Battle of Memories’ as mentioned in press statement issued by World Cultural Net on Tuesday.

According to the Coordinator of World Cultural Net Rajendra Rimal, two films will be screened in each day of the festival. President of the World Cultural Net Deepak Sarkar further informed that the festival will feature a special interaction program with Chen Suwang, professor at Pecking University-Art Institute. Sarkar said, “The interaction will help to promote cross border culture between Nepal and China.”


Here are some description about the movie that are going to be screened in the festival:

 

Movie:Operation Mekong
Director: Dante Lam
Producer: Bona Film Group
Release Date: 30th September 2016

This movie is based on a true event of the 2011 Mekong River massacre in Thailand where two Chinese cargo ships were attacked and all 13 crew members were killed. It is one of the most entertaining crime action movie and is also in the list of the highest-grossing films in China. It has won the Best Picture Award at the 31st Golden Rooster Awards. It also clinched the Golden Angel Award Film, Best Actor (Zhang Hanyu) and Best Producer at the 12th Chinese American Film Festival. It was also given the title of the Most Popular Film at the 13th Guangzhou Student Film Festival. The Favorite Film and the Favorite Actor (Zhang Hanyu) was also given to Operation Mekong at the 24th Beijing College Student Film Festival.

 

Movie:  Wolf Totem
Director: Jean-Jacques Annaud
Producer: Jean-Jacques Annaud, Xavier Castano, La Peikang, Bill Kong

Wolf Totem is story about a Chinese student who goes to Mongolia to teach Shepherds but there he learns about the threat from the government to the wolf population there. This movie is based on the 2004 Chinese semi-autobiographical novel of “Wolf Totem” by Jiang Rong. The French director Jean-Jacques Annaud has had several political problem with the Chinese government in the past but with this movie he managed to strengthen the relationship between the French Film Industry and the Chinese Film industry.

 

Movie: The Grandmaster
Director: Wong Kar-Wai
Producer: Ng See-Yuen, Mega Ellison, Wong Kar-War
Release Date: 8th January 2013

 

The Grandmaster is a Hong Kong-Chinese martial arts drama based movie. The plot revolves around the grandmaster of Wing Chu (traditional Southern Chinese Kung Fu) known as Ip Man who is known all round the world for training Bruce Lee. This film was selected for Hong Kong International Film Festival and was the opening film at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival in February 2013. It was also shortlisted for the Best Foreign Language Film and nominated for Best Cinematography and Best Costume Design at the 86th Academy Awards.

Movie: Running like Wind
Director:Zhong Hai
Producer: Zhang Hao, Huang Jun, Fu Ruoqing
Release Date: 16th October 2017

This film is based on the story of QiongzhongGir’s’ Team in Hainan Province, who had won the world youth football championship in Gothic Cup three times. It shows us in a humorous way that how a frustrated football coach leads a bunch of girls of Li nationality who have never seen a real football before to chase their football dream. It shows us the spirit of sports and youth with a touch of humor and also the unique culture and customs of Li nationality.

 

Movie: Go Away Mr. Tumor
Director: Han Yan
Producer: Wanda Pictures
Release date: 13th August 2015



Go Away Mr. Tumor is a movie based on the life of a comic book artist Xiong Dung who was diagnosed with cancer and yet still managed to write a Web Comic which was very popular in China, unfortunately she died at the age of 30 in 2012. Due to film’s comedic genre it was a box office hit and was also selected as the Chinese entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Award. This film was also featured in the 5th Annual Chinese International Co-Production Film Screenings which was hosted by the Motion Picture Association of America and China’s Film Bureau.

 

Movie: Battle of Memories

Release date: 28th April 2017


This story takes place in the near future of 2025 where the protagonist undergoes a procedure to erase some of his memories due to some problems at the Memory Center he finds himself in the mind of a serial killer. This is one of the best Mystery and Scientific-Fiction movie China has produced. This film won the Golden Dragon Award at the International Chinese Film Festival in 2018 for the Best Screenplay.
