Chinese Defense Minister welcomed at NA headquarters

KATHMANDU, Nov 29: The State Councilor and Defense Minister of the People’s Republic of China, Wei Fenghe has reached the Nepal Army headquarters in the capital.

Wei Fenghe, who is on a one-day working visit to Nepal, inspected the army headquarters where he was offered the guard of honor by a contingent of the Nepal Army.

Leading a 21-member Chinese delegate, Defense Minister Wei arrived at the Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA) earlier on Sunday via a special aircraft. The entourage comprises high-ranking officials of the People's Liberation Army.

Wei is scheduled to pay courtesy calls on President Bidya Devi Bhandari and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli who also holds the portfolio of Defense Minister. He is also scheduled to meet Chief of Army Staffs Purna Chandra Thapa.

During the meeting, the two sides are expected to hold talks on further enhancing military-to-military ties between the two countries. They are also likely to hold discussion on the military exercise between the Nepal Army and the People's Liberation Army of China which is not taking place this year owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to sources.

The high-level visit from China is taking place two days after Indian Foreign Secretary Harsha Vardhan Shringla paid a two-day visit to Nepal.

Wrapping up his visit, Fenghe is leaving Kathmandu for Bangladesh later today.
