Chandragiri deputy mayor cup inter-school volleyball from Wednesday

KATHMANDU, May 20: The second edition of Chandragiri Deputy Mayor Cup Inter-School Open Volleyball Competition is set to start from Wednesday.

New Diamond Academy ‘A’ and Paropakar Adarsh Medium School will face in the inaugural match of the new season played at New Diamond Academy Court in Naikap organized by Madan Bhandari Sports Academy and Chandragiri City Committee.

The ten teams participating in the tournament are divided in four groups. The top teams of each group will face in the semifinals. Two groups consist of three teams and the rest two consist of four teams. They will play knock-out matches in the respective group. The group matches will be played in best of three sets whereas the semifinals and final matches will be best of five. The president of Nepal volleyball Association (NVA), Manoranjan Raman Sharma, stressed on the need of holding more volleyball competitions in the country. He said it was important to increase investment in this national sport of Nepal. 

"Although volleyball is labeled as the national sport, its national association -- the NVA -- has not received any significant support from the government." He said. "The members of parliament were unaware of the sport in a recent meeting held to discuss the importance and development of the national sport. It hurts us all."

The winner of the school competition will receive a cash prize of Rs 60,000. Similarly, the first and second runner-ups will bag Rs 30,000 and Rs 15,000, respectively. Likewise, the best spiker, blocker, server, defender, and setter will receive Rs 1,000 each.

A friendly match between New Diamond Academy and one of the participating departmental teams will be played to celebrate the ‘Volleyball Day’ during the tournament.
