KATHMANDU, Oct 1: The newly-elected President of Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) Chatur Bahadur Chand has expressed his confidence that the International Cricket Council (ICC) will end the suspension on the central governing body of Nepali cricket next month.

Nepali cricket was in crisis following the suspension of the apex body of the cricket in April 2016 by the ICC citing government interference.

The CAN successfully held its elections under the supervision of the Independent Panel, formed by the ICC, in accordance with the statute approved by the suspended elected body of CAN and elected Chand as the new president for the second term on Saturday.

The new leadership is hopeful that the ICC will lift its ban on the CAN as the international governing body is holding its board meeting on October 13.

“The elections were held in free and fair manner under the supervision of the Independent Panel of the ICC. Now, the panel will submit its report and the ICC will review it,” said Chand on Monday.
Chand is confident that ICC will reinstate the CAN.

“There is no doubt. We believe to have ticked all the boxes. I am confident the ICC will lift the suspension of CAN membership in the meeting later this month,” said Chand.

The Special General Meeting of the CAN was held on Friday and Saturday where Chand defeated his rival former president of CAN Binay Raj Pandey with a big margin. Chand secured 44 votes, while Pandey garnered 15 of the total 59 votes.

Chand said that the previously elected CAN leadership compromised and sacrificed for the greater good of cricket in the country. All the electoral process has been free of political interferences since the ban and vowed not to get embroiled in any further controversies that may stagnate the cricket in Nepal.

“The governing body will work in a transparent way. Now province-level cricket will be prioritized and promoted as per the spirit of the federal structure of the country,” he said.
