Central leaders to former lawmakers in race of local polls

GORKHA, May 3: Candidates in Gorkha district for the local polls, which are just 10 days away, range from central leaders of various political parties to former lawmakers.

Gyanendra Kumal, a former lawmaker under the proportional electoral system, is vying for the polls representing former Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai's Naya Shakti Party. He is fighting for the mayoral post in Gorkha Municipality.

The main opposition CPN-UML has fielded Samjhana Devkota in the municipality for the post of deputy mayor. She was a candidate of UML in the second Constitution Assembly (CA) election. UML's district chairman Prem Gurnung is also vying for the post of Siranchowk Rural Municipality chief. 

Likewise, Nepali Congress (NC) leader Ishwar Pandey, who did not get a ticket for the CA, is now vying for the post of Bhimsen Rural Municipality chief.

The district chapter of the ruling CPN (Maoist-Centre) has fielded 12 of its central committee members as candidates of the election from various local units of the district. Out of them, three are politburo members. 

Jaganath Khanal, who is vying to be the chief of Arughat Rural Municipality, Deepak Devkota for Ajirkot Rural Municipality and Lokendra Prasad Bajracharya for Bhimsen Rural Municipality, are the party's politburo members.
