CCTV cameras to be installed on roads in Thamel area

KATHMANDU, May 4: CCTV cameras are going to be installed on the roads in Thamel, the main tourist hub of the federal capital. Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) in collaboration with Thamel Tourism Development Council (TTDC) will install CCTV cameras on the roads within Thamel.

KMC Police Chief Rajunath Pandey, Kathmandu Valley Police Office Superintendent of Police Krishna Dhital and the team of TTDC have also made an on-site inspection regarding the installation of CC cameras inside Thamel.

President of TTDC Bhabishwor Sharma said that in collaboration with the metropolis, CCTV cameras are going to be installed on the roads within Thamel. "On Wednesday, a team of the metropolis, Nepal Police and TTDC spent five hours observing which CCTV cameras are needed in the intersections and roads in Thamel. CCTV cameras will be installed in Thamel soon," he said.

About 80 percent of tourists who visit Nepal come to visit Thamel. CCTV cameras are going to be installed to give a sense of security to domestic and foreign tourists visiting Thamel. Superintendent of Police Krishna Dhital of Kathmandu Valley Police Office said that more than 100 CCTV cameras will be installed on the roads within Thamel.

In the current fiscal year, the metropolis has provided a financial support of Rs 60 million to Valley Police Office Ranipokhari to reduce criminal incidents in Kathmandu.

CCTV cameras will be purchased from that amount and will be installed at the required locations in Kathmandu. Almost 3,000 house owners and entrepreneurs belong to Thamel, which is located in Ward No. 16, 17, 26 and 27 of the metropolis.
