KATHMANDU, Sept 19: Canada is set to reduce the number of permits granted to international students by 45 percent in 2025. This comes after a 35 percent cut in student enrollment in 2024, where visas were issued to only 360,000 students.

Though Canada’s economy benefits from immigrants, officials have raised concerns about the misuse of the system. According to authorities, some individuals are taking advantage of student visas for illegal activities, leading to stricter regulations in the coming years.

The growing number of international students has put pressure on Canada’s housing and health sectors, prompting the government to decrease enrollment for the next two years. This decision will significantly impact students from Nepal, where hundreds travel to Canada for higher education each year.

In addition to the reduced enrollment, Canada is also tightening work permits for students.
