Business of Thesis

KATHMANDU, Sept 16: Writing a thesis or an academic paper is stressful. It takes a lot out of you. You have to muster through bulky study materials, interview lots of people and visit various places. And after all the preliminary work, you have to write everything and boil down your findings into logical conclusions.

These are some regular hurdles that you need to cross if you want to graduate in your bachelors or masters program. But what if you found someone who could produce your final project? You don’t have to do anything but pay money in return for your thesis. There are many people who are involved in selling thesis to students. Recent reports have shown that this business is deeply organized and even top level university authorities are involved in this racket.

What does writing a thesis mean to a student? Why do they choose an easy way out instead of working on their own? Who should take the initiative to discourage this trend?
We asked a few youngsters about their take on this matter.

I’m really proud of my undergraduate thesis. From research to the final draft, it took me six months. It is a challenge to recall everything you’ve studied so far in your four year long program and channel all that knowledge to write a single academic paper. But it is also the only visible output of your study.

However, it is plain depressing to hear stories about people making a business out of selling thesis to young students. Students seek the easy way out because they don’t feel too much motivated to write their own thesis. University authorities and teachers should be responsible enough to properly guide their students.

They can ensure that by regularly calling up their students to produce a quarterly report on their work and go through their progress in a step by step manner instead of demanding their entire thesis on the day of the deadline.

When you easily get to buy a thesis in the market, students are bound to get lazy and show less commitment towards original work.

It is quite unfair. Some students are so dedicated towards their thesis while others are getting away by submitting others’ work. This may seem a simple problem to many but it has a large potential to plague different fields as well. How can we expect the youths of today to become future leaders, if they don’t even have the patience and ability to write and research on their own?

I think our generation is involved in too many activities and managing time is the biggest challenge. So obviously they plagiarize or buy thesis just to get their work done fast. If this trend keeps on going then the students will become the ultimate sufferers.

Universities should work out a model to monitor their students. When students realize that they are doing something illegal then they will be scared to look out for such false hopes.

Compared to foreign universities, our universities don’t take student thesis or researches seriously. The purpose of a thesis is to bring something innovative and provide a new lens to see things. From my experience what I can say is that most of the legal researches that students produce now are mostly repetitive and have no power to gravitate serious discourses.

Students are submitting their thesis just for the sake of submission. Add to that the day to day trouble of juggling an office job with your studies, no wonder why we produce weak researches.

I think in this situation, the biggest change maker should be the university authorities. They should not set such low standards for students. If they want they could employ plagiarism checker software and make the students feel the real importance of writing and researching. When a student recognizes the gravity of his work, he will stop looking for shortcuts.
