KATHMANDU, Feb 15: Bibeksheel Nepali Party (BNP) has sought an impeachment motion against CIAA Commissioner Raj Narayan Pathak for his alleged involvement in the corruption case.

Issuing a press statement on Friday, BNP also asked why Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli kept mum on the issue despite being aware of the case some four months ago.  Meanwhile, BNP asked the  government  to clarify the people about it by issuing a white paper.

“The lawmakers should file the impeachment motion against CIAA Commissioner Pathak because of his involvement in the graft case and take due legal action against him,” BNP said in the statement issued today adding that past trends have shown that such cases have been often dismissed by making the accused tender resignation.

"The good governance will not be established unless this practice is avoided," it further said.

Raj Narayan Pathak, one of the commissioners at the CIAA resigned from his post today while the parliamentarians of Nepal Communist Party were planning to collect signatures to impeach Raj Narayan Pathak, for allegedly receiving a bribe from the management committee official of an engineering college in Bhaktapur in return for promising to resolve an ownership row in his favor.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli ordered ruling Nepal Communist Party lawmakers to initiate the impeachment process against Pathak if he did not step down voluntarily.

The Background

Pathak was picked as commissioner of the anti-graft body in 2015 by the Constitutional Council headed at the time by then Prime Minister Sushil Koirala. Pathak, a retired deputy attorney general, was recommended as CIAA commissioner by Madhes-based parties as part of sharing of the spoils among major political parties. The sharp-minded Pathak was known among colleagues for involvement in bribery for settling cases when he was at the Office of Attorney General.
