KATHMANDU, May 25: South Asian Games (SAG) record holder taekwondo ace Deepak Bista underwent successful surgery of his left knee on Tuesday. Bista had left for Bangkok last week for the operation.

Bista, the only athlete to bag four consecutive gold medals in the SAG, informed myrepublica.com through email that Dr Chanin Lamsam performed the major operation at Thonburi Hospital, Thailand. [break]

The doctor was astonished to learn that Bista fought despite lacking two ligaments. During the operation, the void ligament space was filled by tendon. The other two ligaments -- ACL and PCL -- were also replaced in his left knee.

The government had provided one million rupees for his treatment.

His injury resurfaced during the 11th SAG held in Dhaka earlier this year.

Five years ago also, Dr Lamsam had operated on Bista´s right knee.
