Police suspect Anuma committed suicide after her lover, Dr Sujan Dhakal, refused to marry her

KATHMANDU, May 1: Anuma Shrestha, a 34-year-old staff nurse who worked at Bir Hospital was found dead in a house in Balaju’s Bohoratar on Saturday evening.


Anuma’s body was found hanging in a room of Dr Sujan Dhakal’s rented home at Bohoratar Heights of Kathmandu’s Balaju. Dr Dhakal originally hails from Nuwakot district. The police removed Anuma’s body soon after they were informed about the incident on Saturday evening. 


Preliminary investigation by the police has shown that Dr Dhakal and the deceased Anuma were in a love relationship. Dr Dhakal works at Koshi Hospital in Biratnagar. The police also suspect that Anuma may have committed suicide.

According to Sitaram Rijal, Superintendent of Police (SP) and the spokesperson for Kathmandu District Police Office, further investigation into the case is underway. SP Rijal said, “The police have also found a 'suicide note' along with the body.”


Police said that according to the suicide note, Anuma and Dr Dhakal were in a love relationship for the past four years but Dr Dhakal’s family was against their marriage, forcing her to commit suicide. Sources say that Shrestha has mentioned about her life experience, love relationships, attempts to get married and rejection by her lover’s family.


According to deceased Shrestha's family source, Dr Dhakal and her father refused to marry Shrestha. Anuma, who was living in Sorakhutte, used to stay at Dr Dhakal’s house frequently as she was residing nearby. When the incident happened, police sources said, Dr Dhakal was in Dharan.


Anuma’s relatives called her lover Dr Dhakal after the incident. A complaint has been filed against him for suicide abetment. Based on the suicide note, the relatives filed a complaint with the police in Balaju Police station for instigating suicide, said Rijal, spokesperson for the Kathmandu District Police Office.


After the complaint, the police have prepared to arrest Dr Dhakal and continue further investigation into the case. Police sources said that he was on his way to Kathmandu from Biratnagar.
