KATHMANDU, Feb 24: With an objective to draw the public's attention toward health hazards caused by increasing air pollution in the Kathmandu Valley, a peaceful demonstration was organized in Chabahil coinciding with the Shivaratri festival on Friday.
Pedestrians, locals and entrepreneurs also participated in the demonstration that started from Chabahil and ended at Gaushala. Bibeksheel Nepali had organized the demonstration, which converged into a rally at Gaushala.
“Dust and smoke resulting from the government's haphazard and unmanaged road construction has caused respiratory problems among the residents and also affected public's movement around the city. This has also posed serious risk to people's health and could even claim lives,” read a press statement released by the party. It has also criticized the government for its inability to promptly complete the construction work.
“We organized this demonstration as the air pollution has directly violated our rights to live in a clean environment,” informed Preetam Subedi, coordinator of the program.
